Top Hot Song June 2014 Cold Play "A Sky Full of Star"
As with most modern bands, Coldplay’s sound has shifted over the decades to embrace more pop influences. The difference is that Coldplay has made it a seamless transition that seems like a natural evolution of their music.
From “Viva La Vida” to “The Scientist,” Coldplay has created some of the coolest and most influential music of the last few decades. Their albums run the spectrum of alternative, from energy-filled pop to floaty synths and everything in between.
The newest album, “Ghost Stories,” takes some of the best bits of their prior work and knits it with pop strains to create something unique with their own twist.
It differs from its predecessors in that many different producers, including Avicii and Timbaland, were brought in to work on the project.
“Ghost Stories” is a slow, sad album that focuses on the bittersweet aspects of love and loss without falling into the trap of becoming a sappy breakup album. While some of the lyrics are a bit dramatic, their pairing with the ethereal background music somehow works incredibly well. Either one on its own would turn the album into just another broken-heart story, but the two together create something that is more than the sum of its parts.
The album was released just after the band’s lead singer Chris Martin split up with Gwyneth Paltrow, and it certainly shows. Raw pain is a big part of many of the songs in “Ghost Stories.” On a few of the tracks, this emotion blends well and adds another layer of reality and honesty.
On others, it rips that same quality to shreds. This was a disappointment to me because I’ve always loved Coldplay, and listening to songs that seemed overdramatic was something I had hoped I’d never experience on a Coldplay album. Thankfully, it was only one or two of the songs that had this feel.
The album’s lyrics of the album are decent, despite the fact that the band is shifting its sound to focus more on the instrumental parts of their songs rather than the lyrics. Although they can be a bit maudlin at times, it’s good to know that amid Ke$ha and Flo Rida, some bands will always have great lyrics.
The instrumental work in this album is very good. Although the synths aren’t exactly my style, they fit perfectly with most of the lyrics.
Many of the songs are slow and floaty, but the album avoids being too down-in-the-dumps, with faster, catchy songs like “Sky Full of Stars” and “Magic” sprinkled throughout. These songs do, however, are in line with the rest of the album by having lyrics about heartbreak.
“Ghost Stories” is an example of an album that manages to be both bittersweet and sad without resorting to a full-out Ben and Jerry’s while watching romcoms level of depressing. It may be difficult for most bands to find that balance, but Coldplay makes it look easy.
The album is sad, but it’s sad in a good way. Martin has nailed it again in a slightly different style than he usually does, and all in all it’s a good album. Not amazing, as I’d come to expect from Coldplay, but good.
My recommendation would be to handpick the songs that you enjoy from the album and purchase those instead of shelling out the money for all of “Ghost Stories.”
